TrueNAS and Windows Storage Spaces

Project objective
Compare two storage approaches in practice and select a storage platform for further lab integration.
My implementation
- Built TrueNAS with a RAIDZ1 pool in the lab.
- Worked with a storage pool, virtual disk and volume in Windows Storage Spaces.
- Used mirroring and thin provisioning in the Windows approach.
- Used TrueNAS as ff-store-01 for subsequent iSCSI and backup connections.
Technical context
| TrueNAS | pool1 · RAIDZ1 · three virtual disks |
|---|---|
| Windows | pool1_disk1 · Mirror · Thin |
| Windows capacity during the project | 1.00 TB virtual disk |
| Storage address | ff-store-01 · 192.168.10.12 |

Result
The configurations of both storage approaches were discussed earlier in the project and checked through their interfaces. TrueNAS is reachable in the current record through ping and an iSCSI port test.
Verification and operational evidence
ping -c 3 192.168.10.12
nc -vz 192.168.10.12 3260
Practical troubleshooting
A Windows virtual disk was initially created as 1 GB by mistake. The error was corrected before further use and the disk was recreated as 1 TB.
Security and technical context
RAID does not replace backup. Thin provisioning requires capacity monitoring. A controlled disk failure or rebuild is not presented as having been performed.
Transferable skills
Storage design, redundancy, provisioning, capacity control and justified platform selection.
Project status
Completed according to confirmation from the project lead.
